  • 1972: Final phase of South Commons completed.
  • 1971: South Commons, Quadrangle House, Lincoln Park Tower and Long Grove House opened.

  • 1987: Appointed receiver for the development of family public housing in Chicago.
  • 1986: Habitat Corporate Suites Network began.
  • 1985: Presidential Towers opened.
  • 1983: 540 Lake Shore Drive opened.
  • 1983: Major renovations to Pines of Edgewater, Phases I and II.
  • 1981: Asbury Plaza opened.
  • 1980: Columbus Plaza and Huron Plaza opened.
  • 1980: Lincoln Park Terrace converted to condominiums.
  • 1990s

  • 1999: Began management of St. Louis properties.
  • 1998: South Commons converted to condominiums.
  • 1998: Began management of Riverfront Towers in Detroit.
  • 1996: Jade Garden Apartments opened.
  • 1995: Opened East Park Apartments.
  • 1994: Acquired The Buckingham for conversion to condominiums.
  • 1994: Acquired Heritage House for Section 42 rehabilitation.
  • 1991: Cityfront Place opened.
  • 2000s

  • 2006: Kingsbury Plaza opened.
  • 2003: 400 N. LaSalle opened.
  • 2000: Kinzie Park opened.


Since our founding in 1971, we’ve experienced solid growth and landmark success with every project we undertake.

In the 1960s, our Founder and Chairman Daniel Levin led the development
of South Commons, an ambitious 28-acre urban renewal project on
Chicago's South Side. This mixed-income development created more than
1,500 residential units, commercial space and a school.

He emerged from this achievement to found The Habitat Company in 1971 to fulfill the development and management principles demonstrated by South Commons.

Since then The Habitat Company has grown to become a 900-plus member team with over $2.0 billion in assets and more than 20,000 units in six states under management. Many of our developments have become major landmarks.
