Habitat's Marine Drive Apartments Receives PUD Approval

We’re thrilled to announce our latest project as we make waves in Buffalo, NY! Habitat’s Marine Drive Apartments redevelopment has received PUD approval from the Buffalo city council. This transformative “build first” project, in collaboration with Duvernay + Brooks and the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA), will preserve and expand affordable housing on the waterfront by replacing the existing 616 units with more than 700 new apartments.

What’s so special about this project is the vast amount of community input that has gone into the architectural design and planning processes. Our team and BMHA worked with residents and stakeholders throughout 2022 and 2023 to ensure that what matters most to them is included in this redevelopment plan.

This first phase – which includes a mix of low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise homes, a parking garage, and commercial spaces – will break ground in late 2024. By developing the first phase of this new community in the existing parking lot, as opposed to tearing down the existing structure to make room to build, no residents will be displaced throughout this process and can instead remain in their homes until new housing is completed.

"I would love for this to be a model project for the whole country," - Jeff Head, Vice President of Community Development at Habitat.

Check out our video below to learn more about this incredible, community-driven approach that seamlessly integrates new housing on the Buffalo waterfront. We could not be more thrilled to have this level of community involvement, and we cannot wait to break ground on Phase I of this meaningful project.
